Student Advisement

Understanding Advisement

The Role of the Student

Advisement in The Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development requires, and expects, students to be active in educational planning and advisement. They are expected:

  • to know what their degree requirements are;
  • to develop an academic plan;
  • to monitor their academic progress, which includes knowing what courses have been completed, what courses remain, and what good academic standing means;
  • to be aware of policies and procedures which guide their undergraduate study;
  • to consult regularly with the advisor, especially before every registration period;
  • to be aware of how he/she learns in order to balance course schedules.

The Role of the Advisor

The advisor communicates the philosophy of the academic program, is knowledgeable about policies and procedures that guide undergraduate study, course offerings and other academic options in order to help their students customize and make their programs meaningful. In particular, advisors help students define educational and career goals and:

  • to understand the rationale that informs their academic discipline;
  • to understand degree requirements, which include the Morse Academic Plan (MAP), specialization courses and practica; and why certain courses are required and why they are taken in a particular order;
  • to be creative in fulfilling degree requirements, integrating in their educational experience program options, e.g. study abroad, independent study, honors courses;
  • in selecting courses;
  • to monitor their academic progress;
  • identify, and utilize student services, as recommended by a particular issue/problem/concern
