A New Leadership Paradigm

At NYU Steinhardt, leadership is strongly tied to the School’s heritage. As students learn, they see firsthand the importance of values and ethics both as individuals and as professionals.

Steinhardt faculty and graduates are leaders who value diversity and understand that knowledge and experience must inform the greater good. This is not empty rhetoric or a self-congratulatory discourse. This is the reality our students face living and learning in New York City. It is the reality they confront in classrooms, studios, laboratories, and neighborhood centers. It is the reality they embrace as they prepare for careers in an increasingly interdependent world.

Dr. Mary Brabeck, Dean, NYU Steinhardt
“We must imagine a concept of education that moves beyond the classroom, a concept that embraces the neighborhood and the world. Education is lifelong and involves the whole person—intellectual, emotional, aesthetic, physical, and developmental. This is what Steinhardt faculty and students study. These are our tools of service to the wider community.”

Ideas are not enough. There must be communication. There must be action. There must be reflection. And there must be growth.

Advancing Knowledge One Generation at a Time
Faculty at NYU Steinhardt share knowledge and expertise with their students, mentoring them to become tomorrow’s scholars, researchers, and practitioners. Professor Perry Halkitis works with a cross-school team of graduate students to evaluate services offered by the Gay Men’s Health Crisis and other service agencies to HIV-positive women and their families. Building on Professor Halkitis’s groundbreaking studies on HIV/AIDS, Sandra Kupprat, a master’s student in counseling, and Pulane Lucas, a doctoral student in public administration, are interviewing and conducting research on the predominantly low-income women of color who receive these services. Their findings will help New York and other cities better serve the health needs and quality of life issues of women living with HIV.
