Guide for Getting Started International Students Fall 2008

Get Connected… Be Involved… Stay Informed…

Step 1: Visa

Check in with the Office for International Students and Scholars (OISS) within 10 days of your arrival in the United States, 561 La Guardia Place, 212 998 4720, to confirm your visa status and to receive information about the OISS Orientation. Always bring your passport, I –94 and SEVIS I –20 when meeting an OISS advisor. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MAINTAINING YOUR IMMIGRATION STATUS. Report any change in your local address immediately.

Step 2: Immunizations

New York State Public Health Law 2165 requires all students registering for 6 or more credits in a degree-granting program to provide immunization documentation for Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, and Rubella (German Measles) prior to registration. Students born before January 1, 1957 are exempt. Complete the MMR section of your Student Health History form, which will be mailed out in June. For complete information, visit www.nyu.edu/shc/about/immunization.html.

Step 3: English Proficiency

If English is not your first language or if you did not graduate from a college or university where English was the language of instruction, it will be necessary to evaluate your proficiency in English. It is your responsibility to be proficient in English in order to meet academic course requirements. Before meeting NYUSteinhardt Counseling and Student Services staff for pre-advisement (see Step 4), call the American Language Institute (ALI) for an appointment, 48 Cooper Square, Room 200, 212 998 7040. The evaluation will cost a fee and it will take approximately two hours. The staff at ALI will provide you with a report for the Student Services Staff as soon as the test is over.

Step 4: Academic Advisement

Begin pre-advisement by meeting with the NYU Steinhardt Office of Counseling and Student Services at an International Student Information Session. You must bring your letter of acceptance as well as your evaluation report from ALI.

You will receive information about student services, university resources, the New International Student Seminar (E03.2003) as well as sign up for a meeting to discuss your ALI report.

Courses taken at ALI are designed to improve your proficiency in English; they do not count as credits toward degree requirements. If you are required to take classes at the ALI, it may take more time than you had originally expected to finish your required studies, and there will be additional tuition charges. If you are attending NYU as an F-1 or J-1 student, you must obtain permission from OISS in order to register for an ALI course in your first semester while you are also registered for at least 6 academic credits in your program. After your first semester (if an F-1 or J-1 visa holder) you must register for at least 12 credits as well as whatever ALI course your academic program requires.

The Student Services Staff will refer you to your academic advisor who will review your degree requirements and help you select your courses.

If your visa status is F-1 or J-1, you are required to register for full-time study, 12 credits or more unless you are taking courses at ALI. In your first semester, your program will also include the New International Graduate Student Seminar (E03.2003), if you are a graduate student, or the New Student Seminar (E03.0001), if you are an undergraduate. These required seminars meet weekly and include important information about New York City, NYU Steinhardt, and your academic experience.

Step 5: Activate Your Internet Account

All NYU students are assigned a NYUHome Account with free access to email and the Internet. This is also a vital link of communication between the University and you. You can access your account from computer labs and NYUHome stations located around campus, and from your home computer. To activate your account, go to: start.nyu.edu and follow the instructions.

Step 6: Registration For Your Classes

Once you have met with your academic advisor, you are ready to register for classes. You may not register for classes before being advised. You register on-line through ALBERT. Go directly to Albert via the “Academics” tab in your NYU Home account.

Step 7: Payment of Tuition and Fees

Submit payment of tuition and fees by check, cash, credit card or wire transfer at the Student Services Center in the Bursar’s Office, 25 West 4th Street, 1st Floor. The telephone number is 212 998 2800. The fax is 212 995 4584. Albert instructions will inform you about payment deadlines. Payment and billing information may be found via the NYU Bursar site at www.nyu.edu/bursar.

Step 8: NYU Identification

Your ID card is an important document. Carry it with you at all times. The NYU ID Card gives you access to NYU buildings including the libraries and computer labs. To obtain your NYU Identification Card (ID), go to the NYU Card Center, 7 East 12th Street. 212 443 2273.

Step 9: Now Relax!

You are now a registered student in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. WELCOME! You may buy books and academic supplies at the NYU BOOK CENTER, 18 Washington Place, 212 998 4667, or you may prefer to wait until classes begin. Books are listed by course number under your professor’s name. Call the Bookstore for instructions to order books by telephone or visit the website at: www.bookstores.nyu.edu
