Academic Achievement and Dean's List

Dean's List

At the end of the fall and spring terms, the Dean's List is compiled for undergraduate students. This is an honor roll for undergraduate students who have maintained a term average of 3.7 or better in a program of study of at least 8 points in The Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. Grades of F, I, P, N, or R disqualify you.

Department Honors

Many departments and programs offer talented and highly motivated juniors and seniors the opportunity to take individual honors courses, to enroll in special honors programs that may involve independent research or creative work, or to join honorary societies. Students interested in departmental honors should consult with their department by the end of sophomore year.

Applied Psychology

  • Psi Chi National Honor Society in Psychology
  • Senior thesis on faculty-supervised original research

Media, Culture and Communication

  • Lambda Pi Eta Honorary Society
  • Public Relations Society of America
  • Senior Honors Seminar for selected students with at least a 3.75 grade point average, culminating in a senior thesis/project based on faculty-supervised independent research

Educational Theatre

  • Selected to direct own theatrical projects
  • Research and creative projects with senior faculty
  • Collaborative opportunities with faculty at national meetings

Music

  • Special competition and performance opportunities
  • Opportunities to undertake independent research under faculty supervision

Nutrition

  • National Nutrition Honors Society

Speech Pathology

  • Kappa Delta Pi Honorary Society
  • Selected seniors co-teach New Student Seminar with instructors

Studio Art

  • Senior Honors Studio: Opportunity to develop an individual body of work with guidance from senior faculty and visiting artists; studio space provided
  • Senior Honors Exhibition
  • Senior Honors Thesis: A comprehensive, research-based rationale for artistic practice

Teaching and Learning

  • Honors Societies: Phi Delta Kappa, Kappa Delta Pi, Pi Lambda Theta
  • Seniors with superior teaching portfolios, practice, and records of service may qualify for departmental honors

Latin Honors

Students meeting the requirement of having completed at least 64 points toward the degree (in weighted grades) in residence in the Steinhardt School will be eligible to be considered for Latin Honors. Latin Honors will be determined by GPA distribution, so that:

• Summa cum laude is limited to the top 5% of the graduating class
• Magna cum laude is limited to the next 10% of the graduating class
• Cum laude is limited to the next 15% of the graduating class
