Teacher Certification

Timetable for Teacher Certification

  1. Regular and careful advisement is essential to all students. Your academic advisor will evaluate your coursework, recommend electives, and help you decide when certain core courses should be completed. Though you will need to see your advisor during registration times, feel free to consult him or her for academic advising or professional concerns throughout the school year. You will be assigned an advisor as soon as you begin your studies.
  2. Each department that offers a teacher education program has a departmental certification liaison who is a source of information on certification. This person is not necessarily an academic advisor but will assist you with forms and applications, inform you of whom to contact regarding certification issues and when to complete certification related requirements.
  3. One of the most important and time-sensitive parts of your teacher education program is student teaching. You will be practicing your new skills in a real classroom under the supervision of a working teacher. There are forms to fill out and arrangements to be made with which the certification liaison in your department will help you. Your advisor will let you know when you are ready to student teach since preparation and maturity are essential to your success.
  4. All certificates require examinations, which you should complete well before graduation. You may obtain registration bulletins for these exams from your certification liaison or from the Office of the Associate Dean for Student Services and Public Affairs.

For undergraduates only:

One full year before graduation:
Apply for your senior checksheet at Registrar's Student Services, 25 West 4th Street, or by Torchtone. This is the official evaluation of credits you have completed at NYU and will inform you of any deficiencies that must be completed prior to graduation.

For all students:

One full semester before graduation:
Check with your certification liaison to obtain forms and requirements for teacher certification including qualifying examinations. Make an appointment with the Office of Career Services and start planning your first career moves. Apply for graduation at Registrar's Student Services, 25 West 4th Street, or by Torchtone.

Two months before graduation:
Have official transcripts sent to your certification liaison from all colleges and universities you have attended other than NYU. The NYU transcripts will be requested for you. These transcripts must be sent to the New York State Education Department along with your application. Even though transcripts from outside schools are on file in your Admissions docket, they can not be removed and Education Department officials will not accept photocopies.

One month before graduation:
Turn in your finished application to your certification liaison (don't forget to sign it) and ensure that your file is complete other than your final NYU transcript. Remember to issue the postal money order for the application fee. When final transcripts are available, your departmental certification liaison will obtain an official copy and send your completed application to Albany. You will be notified when it has been mailed.
